Kakadu Plum

Vitamin C on steroids!

Few people outside of Australia will have heard of the Kakadu Plum. Don't let this fool you, though, as this nutrient-packed fruit is one of the most powerful superfoods on the planet.

Whilst technically NOT a plum, (it's actually a member of the almond family) the Kakadu Plum, as it's commonly known, is a staple part of the aboriginal diet, thanks to its super-dense nutrient content.

Kakadu Plum

Unlike many other fruits, the Kakadu plum does not fall from the tree it grows won. instead, it stays attached, continuing to store nutrients for the tree, in case they should be needed later. Should the area go through a particularly harsh period of weather, the tree can then "suck" those nutrients back from the fruit, enabling it to survive where other plants might perish.

This ingenious method of storing nutrients leads to one of the most nutrient dense foods on the planet, meaning the kakadu plum more than qualifies as a superfood. It also means that, when harvesting the fruit, care must be taken to leave a sufficient proportion on the tree, just in case that "harsh" period comes along. In contrast to commercial growing, this is where thousands of years of aboriginal culture help, as these important considerations have been taught for many generations.

As a result, fruit harvested from the kakadu plum tree by traditional aboriginal methods gives not only all of the benefits of this amazing fruit, but also one of the most sustainable crops there is.

Kakadu Plum - Nutrient Content

A recent report from the Australian Government's Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation showed that the Kakdu Plum contained 7,000mg of Vitamin C per 100g (dry weight) - more than 100 times the Vitamin C content of blueberries, which are considered to be a high-Vitamin C content fruit! This is, by far, the highest Vitamin C content of any fruit currently known and would, on it's own qualify the Kakadu Plum as a superfood. However, the good news doesn't stop there.

In addition to Vitamin C, the Kakadu Plum also contains numerous other highly beneficial antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, including the following:-

Vitamin E - Known for it's powerful antioxidant properties (amongst other things) Vitamin E is a key component of the immune system and plays an important role in fertility.

Ellagic Acid - a potent anti-cancer compound found in fruits and berries (especially raspberries and related fruits).

Gallic Acid
